Yep! We're talking periods today. This is a hair AND lifestyle blog, after all!
I don't know about y'all but almost from the very moment I got my first period, I knew it was going to be a hassle, lol!
I'm sure all women remember that day. For me it was the day after Christmas, right before the second half of my 8th grade year (and that's late when compared to some of my friends.) I had mixed feelings, I was the second to last of my close friends to get my period so I both wanted it but was really nervous....then it lasted 7 days and I was like GIRL BYE!! That was about 13 years ago (dating myself) and it's been a battle for sure. So, when I discovered organic tampons this year, and started to read about how they could help me, I was eager to try. I tested them for 6 months.
There are a good number of brands to try now, I went with L. Brand. It was the cheapest at Target
and I'm not going to lie, the hip, clear packaging with leaf designs on the wrappers, had caught my eye a few times before I actually made the purchase. For reference, I used to exclusively use U. By Kotex, they were the most comfortable for me and I used them for years so switching brands was kind of a big deal.
So let's get into it. How did these L. Brand organic tampons (and pads) change my period?
They made my period shorter!!
This is something that I had read other women experienced with organic tampons but I was skeptical. I went into this literally just wanting to test it out but I’d say about 4 months in was when I realized that my period had gone from 7 full days, to about 5. This was a big deal for me because I often dreaded that week. I knew it would be a long week of discomfort for me.
They made my period lighter!!
Yep! Now if you’re like me, your period has changed from time to time throughout your life. One thing mine has never done is been lighter. I’m used to a heavy period for at least 5 days and that includes overnight. Now? My period starts to lighten around day 3 and by day 3-4 I don’t even need protection at night ( I still use it though, just in case!)
They SIGNIFICANTLY reduced my cramps.
I’ve had bad cramps since high school. I used to have to call my mom to pick me up early because I would be in so much pain. This didn’t let up as I got older. Some months I would literally throw up from the pain, only I couldn’t call my mom to let me leave work early, I just had to suffer through it. Now, my day one cramps feel like day 3 cramps. They're there but I'm not curled up in a ball feeling like my insides are being twisted and stabbed repeatedly. I may have to lay down and sleep it off but it's manageable.
As a side note, if bad cramps are something you are dealing with, this is something that has helped me over the years, the hot towel method.
Get a face towel ( wash cloth) and wet it just enough so that you can squeeze some water out, but not that it’s dripping.
Put it in the microwave for 2 minutes and then take it out. It will be extremely hot so be very careful picking it up, I like to use tongs. Put it into a zip-lock bag.
Wrap it in a shirt so that the heat isn’t directly on your skin. You can also buy a heating pad lol but this is the way I do it and it works wonders!
They donate to women in need!
For every L. product you purchase, one is made accessible to a person who needs it, and who doesn't love a good B. Corp?
What about the application, sis!?
As for application, the tampons were a bit tricky to use at first. Mainly because the U. By Kotex has a clicking mechanism that lets you know when you have pulled the tampon applicator out enough and you need to push back in. L. Brand doesn't have that, so for me it was trial and error. But look, after all of the benefits I got from them, that learning curve was worth it for me!
Will you have the same experience?
Maybe, maybe not but it is definitely worth the try. As for me, I'll never go back to the non-organic products. It's going to be me and L. Brand for a loonnggg time. :) I also have a little sister who will be getting a period in the near future (Ahhh) and I want her to start off using these chlorine, pesticide, and BPA-free products (they have pads too!)
